Guitar (Gittern/Gytern) and Lute where the most important stringed instrument of the outgoing medieval period and in the Renaissance. Loved by all levels of society, it was played by royal appointment, in religious service, in taverns, for singing, for dancing, and in duets with the lute. The preserved repertoire survived through the centuries and ended finally as transcriptions from the so called Tabulatur in the repertoire of today’s classical guitar.
